Hartford - The Green Party of Connecticut announced today a “Fall 2013 Local Election Rally” featuring a keynote speech by Dr. Jill Stein, the 2012 Green Party candidate for President, at 3 pm on Sunday, September 8, 2013 at the Portland Senior Center, 7 Waverly Avenue, in Portland, CT. The rally will feature short speeches by local candidates for city and town office, as well as Dr. Stein’s review of the Presidential race in 2012 and what is at stake for the country in 2016.
“We think this ’Kick Off’ Rally will spotlight our local candidates and give people a reason to support the Green Party on both a local and a national level” said Tim McKee, a Green Party spokesperson. He explained the event is a good way for people to meet other local candidates they might not meet any other way. McKee added, “While no one will be turned away for lack of money, we hope people will donate to both the state party and to our local candidates.”
“We have about 40 Green officeholders in Connecticut and about 133 elected Green office holders across the country in 2013” McKee said. He added “Many Connecticut Greens serve both as Justices of the Peace and on local town boards and commissions. We hope to elect more new town councilors in 2013 and this event will spotlight many new candidates.”
Dr. Stein, a possible 2016 candidate for President, will keynote many of the national issues the Greens have been focused on, including the National Security Agency spying scandal, the continuing war in the Middle East, and the Greens’ call for a “Green New Deal” to fix both the planet and the economy.
