March 2, 2004

The Green Party of Connecticut will hold its Annual Meeting on Saturday, March 13th, 2004 from 1:00PM to 5:00PM at the First Church of Christ, 190 Court Street in Middletown. The meeting will include a discussion of the upcoming Presidential Elections and Green Party officers for the next year will be elected at this meeting.

Each candidate for office in the Green Party has submitted a written statement for your consideration (enclosed). There will be two opportunities to meet the candidates: at Candidates' Night and at the Annual Meeting. Each candidate will be presenting a brief overview of his or her qualifications and questions may be asked at both of these events. Candidates' Night will be on Thursday February 26th at 6:30 pm in the Hartford Greens Office, 418A New Britain Avenue, Hartford.

Our Bylaws state that anyone registered to vote as a Green with the State of Connecticut is a Green Party voting member. In addition, anyone who can satisfy at least 2 of the following criteria will be considered a Green Party member eligible to vote:

  1. attended two Green Party meetings (either state meetings or meetings of an officially recognized chapter) in past year;
  2. on the state's official mailing list; and/or has submitted a written (or email) request for membership or materials,
  3. has performed at least two volunteer activities with CTGP (or with a coalition partner) of the Green Party in past year.

If you, or someone you know, meets our membership criteria but did not receive a ballot, contact Jean de Smet as soon as possible, preferably by email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or call her at 860-456-2188 with your membership qualifications to vote in this election.

This year's election results will be tallied using a proportional representation system, which is fully described on the website of the Center for Voting and Democracy, at www.fairvote.org/pr/. When reading the candidates' statements, please keep in mind that you will need to rank your choices for each office in order of preference, as opposed to merely choosing names from among the choices.

You may either vote at the March 13th meeting or by mail (see instructions on the ballot). IMPORTANT: Please bring the enclosed ballot with you if you will be voting at the annual meeting. If inclement weather forces the cancellation of the Annual Meeting on March 13th, the Annual Meeting will be held on Saturday, March 20th from 1-5pm. The deadline for receipt of postmarked ballots will not change. Call the answering machine at the Hartford Greens office (860-524-9448) on March 13th to determine if the election is cancelled. The location of the snow date election will also be put on this answering machine, when this location is determined.

DIRECTIONS TO THE ANNUAL MEETING: Take Route 9 to the Rt. 66/Washington St. exit in Middletown. Proceed straight on WASHINGTON ST. for approximately a tenth of a mile. At the first set of lights turn LEFT onto MAIN ST. Take your FIRST RIGHT onto COURT ST. The First Church of Christ (190 Court St.) will be on your right about a tenth of mile from the corner of Main and Court.

While we very much need and appreciate financial contributions, if you wish to make a donation at this time, we ask that you use a separate envelope to help to ensure the integrity of the ballot counting procedure and to avoid losing any checks.

Thank you for your participation in the democratic process.
