NORWICH, CT—Scott Deshefy accepted the Green Party of Connecticut's 2nd Congressional District nomination at a Nominating Convention on Saturday, April 12, 2008, at the Otis Library, in Norwich, CT.

Deshefy is a retired Department of Environmental Services scientist for the State of Connecticut. In accepting the nomination, he spoke of ending the war in Iraq, promoting a single payer health care system and converting jobs at Electric Boat and the Naval base into sustainable long term jobs.

Also speaking and endorsing Deshefy were Green First Selectperson of Windham Jean deSmet and State Green Party Co-Chair Mike DeRosa.

Green Party spokesperson Tim McKee said this is the first Green Party Convention for the Second Congressional District in the state and the Greens are seeking to build a stronger network in the large eastern part of the state, in a district that starts in Enfield and goes to New London. All members of the Green Party who reside in the 2nd Congressional District were eligible to vote at the convention.

McKee added, "I think Deshefy is a very qualified candidate for Congress. He worked at the Electric Boat shipyards as a young man, was on the Norwich school board and has been a working scientist for the state dealing with toxic issues across the state. This is an impressive resume for any candidate. It shows he is not a professional politician, and he brings a breath of fresh air to the race."

The Convention also discussed issues the 2nd District will face in the future. The Greens strongly opposed the proposals for paving over open space to expand Route 11, for a new diesel burning power plant on the Windham-Willimantic line, and for a statewide ash dump in Franklin requested by the Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority.

Greens also urged the closing of the Millstone Nuclear power plant and replacing the energy with wind, solar and other alternatives for the Second District.
