Pillsbury’s Statement at the English Station Power Plant Protest, 09/08/02.
Congresswoman DeLauro is concerned about the environment. She has
voted to keep Nevada from becoming a radioactive waste dumping site, and
she has traveled to Alaska to protect its vast wilderness from Republican
oilmen, like President George Bush and Vice -President Dick Cheney.
I applaud her for these votes. But when it comes to protecting New Haven‘s
environment, she either is Absent WithOut Leave or is involved in promoting
her corporate cronies' interests over the public interest.
You remember when Rep. DeLauro’s campaign contributor Lynn Fusco and
family were convincing the city, state, and federal governments to support the
construction of another boondoggle and environmental disaster, the Long
Wharf Mall, at the intersection of two interstate highways within the City of New
Haven. Delauro lobbied the U.S. Postal Service to sell its Brewery Street
property to the mall’s developers, which included the Fusco Corporation at
555 Long Wharf Drive. Fortunately, despite nearly unanimous Democratic and
Republican support, the proposed mall died after protests by the Green Party
and other environmental activists, when a key retailer withdrew its economic
support of this environmental nightmare.
Now, here we are at the English Station power plant, which was closed in
1992, because it was old, inefficient and environmentally unsound. It is about
to reopen after being acquired by Quinnipiac Energy, a company originally
managed by Mark Minninberg, another Democratic friend of Rosa
DeLauro. New Haven already has the State’s worst air quality. New Haven already has
the State’s highest rate of asthma related hospitalizations. 18% of New Haven
school children report suffering from asthma. The last thing the children of
New Haven need is another dirty power plant spewing more pollution into the
air we breathe. Go figure why Rosa, a so-called champion for our children and
for our environment, hasn’t spoken out about English Station. Doesn’t she
care about our children and the air they breathe?
As you can see, in Washington, D.C., Rep. DeLauro is a protector and friend
of America’s environment. In New Haven, however, Ms. DeLauro is a
supporter of Corporate America’s and her corporate contributors greedy
"profits before people" agenda.
Dirty politics means dirty air.
There is an alternative.
Be Clean. Vote Green.
Vote for Pillsbury for Congress in November.
