Candidates Pillsbury and Elser Challenge Rep. DeLauro to Debate the Issues.

New Haven’s Little Italy, Friday, September 06, 2002
The following statement comes from the candidate announcement Congresswoman DeLauro made two months ago in her backyard. http://nearhome.com/delauro/announce.html

"You know, one of my opponents in this race says he is running on his 'pedigree' and his desire to turnout the ('Italo-Americans') who have achieved office in this community. Well, I am proud of what our families have made here in America. And I delight in the diversity that makes this such a wonderful area to represent in the United States Congress - pedigree or no pedigree."

Today, Republican candidate Richter Elser and I are holding this joint news conference on the corner of Wooster St. and DePalma Court, near the Little Italy iron arch and monument in New Haven, to challenge Congresswoman DeLauro:

  • first, to disclose which one of her opponents she thinks is using this campaign to attack Italian-Americans and her evidence for making that accusation; and
  • second, to stop the mudslinging and personal attacks and debate us on the real issues concerning voters in the 3rd District, such as universal health care, corporate corruption, campaign finance reform, the war against Iraq, and clean air. And I look forward to these debates.

When Mr. Elser and I announced our candidacies earlier this year, Congresswoman DeLauro welcomed us into the race and said she looked forward to debating the issues. Now it’s up to you in the media to make sure these debates take place and are covered. As candidates for public office, we owe it to the voters of the 3rd District to hold public debates. The incumbent has only participated in two debates in the 12 years she has been in office. This fall there will be three debates. The Republican candidate and I invite Congresswoman DeLauro to join us in these debates, so the people of the 3rd District can decide whose ideas they like best. Public dialogue is at the heart of representative democracy and at the center of my campaign to be the next representative of the 3rd District of Connecticut to the Congress of the United States.
