| New Haven, May 6, 2002 - Green Party congressional candidate Charlie
Pillsbury sharply criticized Rep. Rosa DeLauro's votes last week (May 2) on
H.R. 2646 (Farm Bill), which substantially increases federal subsidies to
corporate agribusiness over the next 10 years.
Pillsbury said: "Once again Rep. DeLauro has sacrificed the interests of
local taxpayers by voting to give away billions of dollars over the next 10 years
for grain, cotton and soybean subsidies and other payments that mainly benefit
corporate agribusiness and the very largest family farms and do nothing for
the Third District."
"What is especially outrageous," Pillsbury added, "is that she and
Republican Rob Simmons were the only Connecticut Representatives to vote against
putting an annual limit on taxpayer subsidies of $275,000 per farm. The
billions of dollars of savings from this proposed cap were to be reallocated to
conservation, rural development, nutrition and energy programs."
Pillsbury, a New Haven resident for over 30 years, is currently the
Executive Director of Community Mediation, Inc., the oldest community-based mediation
program in Connecticut. He is also the lay leader of the Church of Christ in
Yale University. He is married to the Rev. Allie Perry, and has four children -
Leah (19), Susie (18), Lydia (16) and Andrew (16).
