NEWS RELEASE
PILLSBURY FOR CONGRESS 2002
For Immediate Release Good Friday, 2002
New Haven, March 29, 2002 - Green Party congressional candidate Charlie
Pillsbury and the Greater New Haven Clergy Association announced today
that they are holding "A Prayer Breakfast for New Haven, America and the
World" on Thurs. April 4 in memory of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the
Graduate Club in New Haven.
Candidate Pillsbury explained, "April 4, 2002, is not only the 34th anniversary
of the assassination of Dr. King, but also the 35th anniversary of his famous
anti-war speech ‘Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence’, which he
delivered at a meeting of Clergy and Laity Concerned at Riverside Church in
New York City."
Pillsbury added, "As lovers of this nation and as people of faith, we must lift up
Dr. King’s spirit and message of nonviolence in the midst of our war on
terrorism lest we forget the ‘terrorism of war’ and the violence that is
destroying our communities and killing our children."
Dr. King, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, shocked and challenged
the nation on April 4, 1967, with his speech declaring his opposition to the
Vietnam War. In it Dr. King said: "A true revolution of values will lay hands on
the world order and say of war: ‘This way of settling our differences is not
just.’... A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military
defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death."
Pillsbury, a New Haven resident for over 30 years, is currently the Executive
Director of Community Mediation, Inc., the oldest community-based mediation
program in Connecticut. He is also the lay leader (Moderator of the Church
Council) of the Church of Christ in Yale University. He is married to the Rev.
Allie Perry, and has four children.
